It is that one single sentence that can make or break your essay, the dreaded thesis sentence. A great deal of emphasis is put on the thesis sentence simply because it sets the tone for the essay. The thesis is generally found in the first paragraph of the essay and tells the reader what the essay is about and what to expect to find in the essay. Consider it the attention-grabber.
Types of Essays and Thesis Statements
The first thing to know before conjuring up a thesis is to know what kind of essay you are writing. If the essay is meant to explain something to the reader, then it is an expository (informational) essay. An analytical essay breaks down an issue and examines each part. Lastly, an argumentative essay will state a claim on a topic and back up the claim with specific evidence.
After you have figured out what kind of essay you are writing, you can now formulate your thesis. Rule #1 to writing a thesis: it has to be very specific and supported with evidence. When it comes to writing the thesis, keep in mind it may not be the very first thing you write. Nowhere in the rulebook does it say that it has to be written before the actual essay. Of course, it is crucial to at least have an idea of what it will be, but don’t expect to come up with it right out of the gate.

Understand that while writing your essay, it is very possible that your topic will change which means your thesis will change. This could actually be a good thing; it could mean that your original thesis was not narrow enough to begin with. A general practice is to give yourself plenty of time to write the essay in case you do need to change the thesis.
